The total area of Montenegro is only 13,812 km\u00b2, including 2,504 km\u00b2 of territorial waters. It is the youngest country in Europe, having become an independent state on June 21, 2006, following a referendum in which the people chose the path of independence. According to the latest population census (December 2023), the country has 623,633 inhabitants.<\/p>\n
Podgorica is the capital and largest city of the country. Cetinje is the old royal capital. While most of the territory is mountainous, plains appear further south, and the Adriatic coastline stretches for 293 km, known for its clean, warm waters and numerous beaches. \nMontenegrin cuisine is a source of national pride. In the north, try Njegu\u0161i prosciutto, sheep cheese, kajmak, ka\u010damak, lamb, and priganice. In the south \u2014 fresh seafood: oysters, mussels, squid, and fish, seasoned with fragrant local olive oil.<\/p>\n
